The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District, partnering with the City of Berea, the Rocky River Watershed Council and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, expects to receive approximately $343,000 from the Ohio Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program in early 2011 to remove three low-head dams along the lower 0.5 miles of Baldwin Creek in Berea.  Cuyahoga SWCD has received an additional $147,000 Grant through the Ohio EPA Surface Water Improvement Fund (SWIF).  The funds will be used to remove three low-head dams along the lower 0.5 miles of Baldwin Creek in Berea.  The project will restore fish passage in lower Baldwin Creek, enhance habitat and reconnect populations of the state-threatened Bigmouth Shiner (Notropis dorsalis) in Baldwin Creek and the East Branch.  A public information session was held Feb. 1, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Berea City Hall.  The Ohio EPA has made available for public information a Limited Environmental Review of the project.  The document may be viewed at either the City of Berea website at www.bereaohio.com, Ohio EPA’s website at (http://epa.ohio.gov/defa/public_comment.aspx), or in hard copy at Berea City Hall, 11 Berea Commons, Berea, OH 44017.  If you would like to receive either an electronic copy via e-mail or a paper copy of the document via U.S. mail upon its release, please contact Dan Halterman of Ohio EPA at either: dan.halterman@epa.state.oh.us or (614) 644-3658.
