Event Description

The Cuyahoga River Remedial Action Plan (RAP), Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District, and the Rocky River Watershed Council will hold a Forest Forum workshop on April 24, to help local government, community leaders and watershed stewards identify areas where forest cover needs restoration.

The workshop will include the communities of Rocky River, Lakewood, Fairview Park, North Olmsted, Cleveland, Brookpark, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Berea, Middleburg Heights, Parma, Strongsville, North Royalton, and Broadview Heights, and will take place from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at the Rocky River Nature Center, 24000 Valley Parkway, North Olmsted, OH 44070.

Participants will receive maps of forest cover for each watershed community, and identify gaps and opportunities for restoration.  The effort will also help direct future funding and planting projects to the areas that are identified in the workshops.

Local government officials, Planning Commission members, community leaders and those interested in environmental stewardship are invited to take part in the workshop.  Community leaders who participate will have the added opportunity to participate in Tree Commission Academy and receive ongoing support.

The workshops are part of the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization’s (CRCPO) Cuyahoga ReLeaf initiative.  “Our mission is to protect and restore the health of the Cuyahoga, and that involves the streams and tributary watersheds that contribute to it, for better or worse,” said Jane Goodman, CRCPO Executive Director.  “Forest cover is an essential part of the system that keeps streams clean and cool, aquatic life healthy, and soil where it belongs.  We need healthy forest canopy if we want healthy streams.”

Funding for the Cuyahoga ReLeaf program is provided by the Ohio Environmental Education Fund.

Registration is required – deadline is Friday, April 20.  Contact Jared Bartley at jbartley@cuyahogaswcd.org or call 216-524-6580 x14 to register, or for more information.
